Cataclysm!

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

The news from Blizzcon 2009 was shocking, and in some cases dumbfounding, but nevertheless these are confirmed releases for the 2010 season.  In The Sundering,  Azeroth will see the face of the world rewritten.  Nothing will be unaffected.

Ramps

Deathwing awakes from her years long slumber, and emerges from Grim Batol, east of the Wetlands.   Where Deathwing awakens, Grim Batol will be sheared in half.  The aspect dragon will bring his followers, The Twilight Hammer, and they will be Headquartering there.  In a rush to confront this new evil, the Horde and the Alliance will construct new port towns nearby.  The Red Dragonflght will arrive to confront The Twilight Dragonflight…  In the Cataclysm, Deathwing’s wrath is so terrible that a hole is burrowed into the world so deeply that it reached Deepholme, the elemental plane of earth.

Uldum and The Sunken City of Vash’jir will be rediscovered as Malfurion Stormrage wakes from the Emerald Nightmare to stop Ragnaros the Fire Lord in Mount Hyjal.  And perhaps most shocking, Mount Hyjal will open once more, under siege by Ragnaros.  Even as the great tree of life begins to recover from Archimonde’s evil, the Fire Lord will be attempting to Burn Nordrassil.  The tree calls out to the hero that can stop him, and Malfurion awakens from the Emerald Nightmare.  He emerges from The Barrow Dens along with the Armies of Cenarius, and begins to wage war against Grim Batol.  The ancient elf needs to prevent him from destroying the new World Tree, Nordrassil.

And there will be losses. In the tidal surge that sweeps across Kalimdor, Auberdine will be destroyed; broken survivors will be moved further inland to safety. During the emergency, though we are not yet certain how, Thrall will be lost, and Garrosh will succeed him as the next Warchief. War will be unavoidable.  Zoram Strand will be similarly pummeled, but the Horde under Garrosh will rebuild it into a small fortress, his own aim of making a new Orgrimaar within striking distance of the elven capital.  The Sunken City of Vashj’ir will be rediscovered, and Uldum will open its doors at last.  Tol’vir in Uldum will become Brann Bronzebeard’s newest exploration; he will take up residence there.  Amidst rumors that a terrible weapon of the titans was buried there, something so powerful even the Makers feared it, the Horde and the Alliance will be urged to investigate the ruins.  The Twilight Dragonflight, not seen since the corruption of the Keepers of Time, make their resurgance under the Epoch Hunter’s leadership, or perhaps some other, even more terrible foe.

With these terrible lines drawn, the worgen put aside their ancient hatred of humanity and join the alliance, and the goblins join with the Horde, closing off their cities from the Alliance and setting the stage for unceasing hostilities.  In the ensuing confusion, Azshara is seized by the goblins, and transformed into a growing city for their budding war machine, and the Undercity, nearly destroyed by Deathwing, will be rebuilt in a new image.  Finally, Southshore, long the most northerly surviving outpost of the Alliance on the Eastern Continent, will fall to the Horde.

What does this mean for Us?  Dungeons and Raids!

There will be more dungeons and raids released with this new expansion than in the entirety of the World of Warcraft before it.

Blackrock Mountain will be completely redesigned after Ragnaros escapes.  Blackrock Caverns, what will be left behind, will be completely different.

The new Skywall will have a Raid option, and a 5 man Dungeon option, and there will be heroic options for many dungeons we thought we were long finished with.  For all those who joked about a heroic Deadmines or Shadowfang Keep, your worst nightmares are about to come true.  There will be a new Tol’Barad PvP Zone, similar in size and function to Wintergrasp or the Isle of Quel’Danas, with stages of evolution and new challenges, and The Battle for Gilneas will be the feature for a new battleground, not dissimilar from Alterac Valley, and there will be Rated Battlegrounds with rewards similar to the Arenas for your standing and performance.

Guild Proliferation!

Guild advancement and ranking will be added, with perks for more famous or accomplished guilds, including reduced repair costs, durability adjustments and even sweeping powers like Mass Resurrection.  The new guild ranking system will allow any deed by any Member to add to the guild’s reknown.   This reknown, can then be used to level the Guild itself from 1-20, with even more sweeping powers and rewards as the guild’s power advances.

Talents

Talent Trees will be rebalanced, offering bonuses to players who specifically gear and train their characters to only one talent spec.  Hybrids will be discourged by the new system in favor of an “all or nothing” approach to training.   Another new system, The Path of Titans, will introduce a system similar to glyphs; they will make your specific class stronger, but they will not be class specific.  A Rogue could use the same Path as a Priest, perhaps for discipline or shadow.

What Was, Shall Be No More…

A new Graphics engine and new maps will enable flight throughout the entire game universe.

A new Starting Zone called “The Lost Isles” will be uncovered with the sundering of Azeroth, and will be the new zone for Levels 1-15.  Finally, the way Quests flow will be highly modified.  It will no longer be impossible to move on to a new quest without finishing the old chain before it.  However, it will make completing the quest much more difficult.

The New Onyxia?

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Amidst rumors that Onyxia is being buffed to Level 80 to give veteran players a run for their money, we are left with a wonderment…

What will the next generations of lower level players do?  If Zul’Gurub and Ahn’Qiraj grow to Level 80, to be followed by Karazhan and Zul’Aman, and if every instance will be growing its own Level 80 heroic… what will the new players have?  In a world that relies on some standard of gearing and leveling for its new players, it will be interesting indeed to see whether the game world takes into account the utter need to include their newer audience in the story.

One Night in Naxxramas

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Tonight, we faced the halls of Naxxramas, and in that self same night, everything fell like one domino pushing the next. I can’t tell you how proud I am of everyone for their attentiveness and their willingness to take what began as a simple heroic badge run, and turn it into a night in the Naxx.

WoWScrnShot_081909_030017

Our friends the Crystal Warriors were right by our side, and but owe our finish against Sapphiron and Kel’thuzad to Cresca Libre; Ian Borthwick and Berlwyn were kind enough to join us when the late hour pulled two of our members away.

Tomorrow will be the start of our actual Naxxramas week. With an impromptu team of alts clearing in a little over four hours, the bar has been set high for our regulars. I look forward to seeing what the week brings, with our first heroic Ulduar shortly coming on the horizon.

Architect of Hope – The Knights of Thalanaar

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

The introduction of new raids and new tasks in preparation for the coming of the Lich King has guilds scurrying to enter Ulduar, recruiting even from other servers. Fear that achievements and their spoils will rapidly become unavailable in the coming season, those with the means are raiding harder than usual, and those trying to reach the raids are facing the very real decision, whether to stick with their guild that can do it “with time,” or risk changing their banners for a shot at doing it “now.”

WoWScrnShot_081709_010009

Members here are no different, and it’s something that has officers and members of Thalanaar looking very carefully at the raiding schedule we offer, and seeking a good way to expand into new content while remaining true to our goal to provide quality roleplay and the family experience.

The Future of Warcraft

WoWScrnShot_081009_213749World of Warcraft: Cataclysm – The End is Near?

Amidst a whirlwind media circus, Blizzard has applied for exclusive rights to “Cataclysm,” making it sound very much like Sargeras may be making his debut in Azeroth, late next year. Will this be the beginning of the end of Azeroth as we know it? Will we end up playing in a land that looks more like the Outlands of Draenor? Blizzard officials are giving up nothing, but the rash of coincidence is compelling.

The Year of the Redeemer
Naxxramas – Heroic Endeavors

An ancient Nerubian ziggurat, Naxxramas was torn free from the ground by agents of the Lich King to serve as Kel’Thuzad’s base of operations as he spreads the plague throughout Lordaeron. Other sources say Obrahiim the Traveler – a great skeletal architect – was pivotal in the conception of Naxxramas, hinting that it was altered or retooled.

WoWScrnShot_081909_030052

Fighting a war against the Scarlet Crusade, the Argent Dawn, the Forsaken and the Alliance, as well as constant incursions of adventurers from every race and nation into the Scourge-controlled Plaguelands on a daily basis, the forces of Kel’Thuzad are severely taxed to maintain the security of his necropolis. The gates of Naxxramas are open, and as Kel’Thuzad’s forces assault Wintergarde Keep, they leave their defenses exposed.

Wrath Progression!

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Turus Thalanaar is up to, but not quite past, Freya in Ulduar-10, Razorscale to 7%. We haven’t tried Ignis or the other Keepers yet.

Naxxramas 10: Cleared
Naxxramas 25: Cleared
Vault of Archavon 10: Archavon
Vault of Archavon 25: Archavon
Obsidian Sanctum 10: Sartharion
Obsidian Sanctum 25: Sartharion
Ulduar 10: Flame Leviathan / XT-002 Desconstructor / Kologarn / Auriaya

I know a few of us have had opportunities to run in other company, and in twenty-fives, but I won’t count their kills as our own, not until the guild has taken those bosses down ourselves. We pretty fairly exploded into Ulduar, folks. I’m very proud of everyone for their hard work and dedication. If anyone went into Ulduar with anything to prove, you have. Well done.

Thalanaar, Interrupted

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Well, our guild website was interrupted temporarily by the Melbourne IT crash.  Sadly, all that work, and our entire archive, was lost in one fateful glitch.  The database was corrupted when we attempted to update our service software, and we lost everything.  We were heartbroken to lose nearly two years of recorded guild history, and completely beside ourselves to lose every scrap of data we had on our own guild progression, which we had tracked since our second trip into Karazhan with our first guild raiding team, the “Guardians.”  Well, we didn’t take it lying down.  We’ve moved to a new host, and have actually discovered a great deal more service at about half the cost!

We’re back, we’re raiding, and we’ve never been stronger. Ulduar is down as far as (but not yet past) Freya, and Naxxramas and the Obsidian Sanctum are far behind us on farm status.

Freya, the Watcher

Freya, the Watcher

Our roleplay story, the Year of the Redeemer, is nearing its final act, as the house moves to secure the weapon whose power, legends suggest, can stand up to any evil, …even Frostmourne. So stay tuned to Thalanaar.org for news and information about the oldest roleplay guild on the Blackwater Raiders.
